Year 4 Outdoor Education

Outdoor Education

Year Level Description

In Term 2, all Year 4 students participate in their first Outdoor Education experience at Carey — three days at Mt Evelyn Recreation Camp, situated at Mt Evelyn. The camp has comfortable, heated, bunkroom accommodation, group recreation and dining areas, ample onsite activities and outdoor play space, as well as access to the surrounding native forest.

Students will spend the first morning with Indigicate participating in some Indigenous education activities including a smoking ceremony. These activities will set the theme for the program with various aspects of Indigenous culture woven throughout the Grade 4 program. In the afternoon, weather permitting, students will take part in a small bushwalk from Silvan Dam to the Camp site in Mt Evelyn. Students bags will be transported to Mt Evelyn by bus however they will need a day bag/backpack to carry with them on the walk. On the second and third days, students will participate in a number of camp-based activities including damper making, group initiative activities, giant swing, low ropes course and a wildlife encounter.

The Year 4 program focusses on the development of life skills, such as independence, self-reliance, and working and living together as a member of a small community. These aspects of personal development are part of a common theme that runs throughout all Outdoor Education at Carey.
