Description

The following shows the wide range of ensembles in which students are encouraged to participate. Vocal and instrumental students should belong to at least one core ensemble. Students are expected to attend all rehearsals, concerts and other events programmed for the year.

(Core ensembles are marked with an asterisk *)

Concert Band Program

Carey’s concert band program in the Middle and Senior Schools begins with the Training Band which caters for Year 7 beginners who have had no experience on the instrument of choice during the previous two years. Students then progress through a series of sequentially graded ensembles leading to the Symphonic Band, which accommodates advanced players.

Chamber Music

A wide range of chamber groups provide opportunities for students to participate in high quality small ensembles.

Contemporary Groups

Guitar ensembles and rock bands enable students to rehearse and perform in a variety of modern ensemble settings.

Tours

Students at Carey have the opportunity to participate in regular regional, interstate and overseas music tours. Interstate and overseas tours are planned well in advance and Middle School musicians are selected to tour with the Middle School Play each year in November.

Theatre Orchestras

Both Middle and Senior Schools present a musical each year. For each production, a theatre orchestra comprised mostly of students is a critical part of the company. The size and instrumentation of the theatre orchestra depends on the requirements of each show and, as such, it varies from year to year.

The experience of performing in a theatre orchestra is very different from the concert stage and is another important facet of Carey’s expansive performing arts program.
