Religion and Society Unit 4

Prerequisites

Religion and Society Unit 3.

Course Description

This unit focusses on internal and external developments which challenge significant beliefs of the selected tradition/s and which may produce enduring historical or social consequences for the tradition/s, or for their social milieu. Students explore historical problems of religious traditions and analyse decisive occasions of religious challenge and response. They also consider the implications of religious belief for action on behalf of social justice and for assessment of new problems arising from social and technological change.

Areas of Study

This study is designed to enable students to:

  • investigate internal and external challenges to religious traditions within an historical framework;
  • assess the ways in which the response of tradition/s to challenge has helped to form religious communities and affected their core beliefs;
  • examine the impact on the relationship of the religious community to the wider society and to other religious communities;
  • examine the distinctive insights that religious traditions may bring to debates on major social and moral issues;
  • analyse the way some specific issues have been confronted by religious communities.
