Optional Activities

Description

Students have the opportunity to participate in activities in addition to their compulsory summer and winter programs.

Athletics
An optional APS activity for any boy or girl.

Teams train on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday afternoons at Box Hill Athletics Track starting in early August.

Competitions are held on Saturdays at various synthetic athletics tracks around Melbourne in August, September and the first 2 weeks of October. (excluding September holiday period)

Chess
All students can join the School Chess Club.

Those performing at a reasonable level in Chess Club games are invited to compete as part of the Carey Chess Team against other schools.

Golf
An after school activity for beginners to advanced players under the tuition of a Golf Professional at Kew Golf Club.

A 10 week program costing approximately $150 per student.​

Middle School Musical
Auditions take place in Term 1.
Rehearsals are after school and on Saturday afternoons.

Students participating in the Middle School Musical are also required to fully participate in the winter sports program.

Auditions take place early in Term 3, with a series of performances at the end of Term 4.

Students can begin or extend their involvement in music as part of an instrumental or choral group.

Snowsports
Parent supervision is compulsory at Snowsports events. Students participating in Snowsports are also required to fully participate in the winter sports program.

Surf League
Schools from around Victoria compete in a wide range of beach activities in the school's surf league event in late February.

Theatre Production
There are four major productions during the year.

  • Senior School Musical (Term 1)
  • Middle School Musical (Term 2)
  • Senior School Play (Term 3)
  • Middle School Play (Term 4)

These are supported by the Theatre Production Crew, a committed group of students, staff and parents who are responsible for set-building.

Students in Years 7 - 10 also participate in a sport/activity while also belonging to the Theatre Production Crew.

Students in Years 11 - 12 can select Theatre Production as their compulsory activity during summer.

Students may focus on a single production or choose to work on multiple productions.

The Theatre Production Crew operates on weekdays after school and on Saturday afternoons at the School's factory. It is a great way to learn skills and become part of a production.

Water Polo
Training occurs once a week and matches against other APS Schools are on Friday evenings and Saturday mornings.

Competitions are held at various swimming pools around Melbourne in August, September and the first 2 weeks of October (excluding September holiday period).
