Common Subjects

Description

A number of common subjects are undertaken by all students in Year 10— English, Humanities, Mathematics, Outdoor Education, Physical Education, Religious Studies and Science.

Students also continue to be involved in our co-curricular program.

Choosing an English Course

Year 10 students study English or English as an Additional Language (EAL).

Depending on results of testing at the time of enrolment in Senior School, students studying English as an Additional Language are also enrolled in the English as an Additional Language (EAL) Support.

Year 10 students may also study one or both of the Semester Electives— Literature and/or English Language.

Learning Development may recommend that a student studies Learning Literacies in addition to English.

Please go to the English Learning Area page to explore these options.

Choosing a Humanities Course

Year 10 students must select at least one Humanities unit, but students may also choose to study more than one of these semester units.

Please go to the Humanities Learning Area page to explore these options.

Choosing a Mathematics Course

There are three Mathematics courses offered at Year 10.

10 Mathematical Methods and Analysis is a prerequisite for Year 11 IB Mathematics Analysis and Approaches or VCE Mathematical Methods Units 1 and 2. This course is for students who have achieved an average of C or above in Year 9 Mathematics. The course focusses on preparing students with the depth of Mathematical knowledge they will be required to understand for the Year 11 IB or VCE courses that have an emphasis on Functions, Geometry and Trigonometry and Calculus.

10 General Mathematics and Applications follows on from Mainstream Year 9 Mathematics. This course prepares students for Year 11 IB Mathematics Applications and Interpretations or VCE General Mathematics. Students who have achieved an average below C over the course of Year 9 Mainstream Mathematics or above a C in Foundation Mathematics are encouraged to select this course. The course focusses on preparing students with the breadth of knowledge they will be required to understand for the Year 11 IB or VCE courses that have an emphasis on Statistics, Probability and Functions. Students use calculators (and/or other technology) for their assessments.

10 Foundation Mathematics follows on from the Foundation and Mainstream Year 9 Mathematics courses. Students who study this course will not be able to study an IB Mathematics subject (which is a requirement to study the IB Diploma Program). Students who have achieved an average below E over the course of Year 9 Mainstream Mathematics or have studied Year 9 Foundation with a below D average are encouraged to select this course. The course focusses on preparing students with the breadth of knowledge they will be required to understand to study the new VCE Foundation Mathematics Units 1-4 course. The course assessments relate to practical applications in mathematics for everyday life at home, in the community, at work and in study. Students use calculators (and/or other technology) for their assessments.

Students should carefully select the level of Mathematics to study in Year 10 to ensure their pathways remain open.

Mathematics Analysis and Approaches SL (MAA SL) or VCE Mathematical Methods Units are prerequisites for a number of University courses such as Commerce and Science.  However, prerequisites for the same course do vary between institutions so please consult the VTAC resources outlined below or contact your Careers Adviser for further information.  You can access the VTAC Prerequisite planner (available here).  You can also use the Prerequisites 2025 document as a guide prerequisites_for_2025.pdf (vtac.edu.au) .

The guide is published two years in advance. Please note that the 2027 guide (which will have the actual prerequisites for students commencing study in 2027) will be released mid 2024 when students are in Year 10.

Students intending to study Chemistry or Physics in Year 11 are advised that Mathematics Analysis and Approaches SL (MAA SL), Mathematics Analysis and Approaches HL (MAA HL) or VCE Mathematical Methods are strongly recommended.

Students unsure of their course selection should consult with their current Mathematics teacher or Kylie Slaney, the Leader of Learning - Mathematics and Computing.

Science

Science is a core subject for all students at year 10. Students will study a term of physics, chemistry and biology with specialist teachers of these subjects to give them a true understanding of the knowledge, skills and approaches required to successfully undertake these in Years 11 and 12.  Students will complete a major project based on their areas of interest and also the experiences and information they gather during the extended expedition.
