Global Politics Unit 4: Global Challenges

Prerequisites

Global Politics Unit 3: Global Actors.

Course Description

This unit investigates key global challenges facing the international community in the twenty-first century. Students examine and analyse the debates surrounding two ethical issues, that are underpinned by international law. Students also explore the context and causes of global crises, and consider the varying effectiveness of responses and challenges to solving them.

Areas of Study

Ethical Issues and Debate

  • Discuss the key terms: realism, cosmopolitanism, justice, ethics, international law.
  • Analysis of TWO of the following issues: human rights, people movement, development, arms control.
  • Exploration of the following within the context of the TWO chosen issues: international laws and treaties relating to the chosen issues, responses by relevant global actors, the ethical debates surrounding chosen issues.

Global Crises

  • The key terms: crisis diplomacy, international co-operation, globalisation, unilateralism.
  • Identification and explanation of TWO of the following crises: climate change armed conflict, terrorism, economic instability.
  • Exploration of the following within the context of the TWO chosen crises: the causes, the responses from key global actors, challenges to effective resolutions.
