Year 8 Outdoor Education

Outdoor Education

Common Unit

Unit description

During Term 3, Year 8 students participate in a six-day program based at the Hattah-Kulkyne National Park in North Western Victoria.

The program has a strong focus on Indigenous Culture with students visiting sites of significance to the Aboriginal people as they travel through the park. Students spend the majority of the program out on an independent expedition with a small group of peers and staff and collaborate with each other to contribute to meal preparation, general campsite duties and navigation between campsites.

Program Activities

  • Bushwalking.
  • Bush cooking.
  • Navigation and orienteering.
  • Expedition (five days).
  • Study of a semi-arid environment.
  • Learning about the environment and being part of a small group community.

Assessment

Informal assessment occurs throughout the program with staff providing feedback as necessary. Students write reflections on their experiences and their learning based on Carey’s nine Attributes of a Positive Learner and are encouraged to self-assess based on a series of guided questions. This aspect of personal and social learning is an important element of Outdoor Education.
