Year 8 Outdoor Education

Outdoor Education

Common Unit

Unit description

During Term 3, Year 8 students participate in a six-day program based at the Hattah-Kulkyne National Park in North Western Victoria.

The program has a strong focus on Indigenous Culture & sustainability with students visiting sites of significance to the Aboriginal people as they travel through the park as well as spending time on private property engaging in conservation activities.

Students spend the majority of the program out on an independent expedition with a small group of peers and staff and collaborate with each other to contribute to meal preparation, general campsite duties and navigation between campsites.

Program Activities:

  • Bushwalking
  • Tree planting or other conservation based community service
  • Navigation and orienteering
  • Expedition (five days)
  • Study of a semi-arid environment
  • Learning about the environment and being part of a small group community

Assessment

Students undertake a collaborative assessment with the Outdoor Education staff based on Carey’s nine positive learner attributes. This assessment process is consistent across all middle school Outdoor Education programs.
