About the Learning Area

The Llew Evans Library at Junior School Kew promotes a love of literature and lifelong learning. Our warm environment provides quiet spaces for independent learning or personal reading. The extensive collection caters for all levels and interests across the Junior School, and supports classroom learning.

Structured information literacy and literature lessons for Year 1 to 6 foster independent research, support the classroom program and assist the children in making wise choices when reading for recreation. Further exploration into authors and illustrators gives students an opportunity to compare and contrast the features and complexities of texts.

Many special events occur during the year in the Llew Evans Library, including Book Week, the Carey Celebrates Literature Festival, Book Fair and visits from authors, storytellers and illustrators.

The Book Chat rotational reading program runs for all classes in Years 3 to 6 and promotes reading at various levels of challenge. Guided discussions every three weeks give students the opportunity to share their understandings and opinions about their chosen book. Parents and teachers facilitate these rich discussions.

The library is open before and after school for borrowing as well as for lunchtime activities.

Our Little Library specifically caters for our ELC and Prep children and is an extra facility for our younger readers to use. Library staff are always on hand to work with students in research, locating resources and selecting books for reading.

We encourage parents to borrow books from our Parent Library selection.

Our Library home page also provides additional support materials, learning links and eBook resources.
