Civics and Citizenship Program

Common Unit

Unit Description

This week-long immersive program provides students with the knowledge and skills to understand what it means to be a citizen of Australia and the world.  

Learning from the PAST, acting NOW to make a difference in the FUTURE, students will undertake the following modules: 

  • What does it mean to be an Australian Citizen? 
  • First Nations Peoples Cultures and Ceremonies  
  • Our History, Our Story, Our Future 
  • Truth Telling, Healing & Reconciliation 
  • How does Parliament Work? 
  • Being a Responsible Citizen- Level 1 First Aid Certificate 
  • Taking Action, Advocacy for School Issue, Party Platforms 
  • UN Youth Australia – Global Action/Climate Change 

 

Building on the knowledge and skills developed during the Year 8 Human Rights Convention, the Civics and Citizenship program aims to enable students to: 

  • understand the concept of ‘global identity’ and ‘global citizenship’ and their implications as Australian citizens 
  • consider and identify the qualities of a citizen in a contemporary, successful democracy, including our rights, responsibilities and how we might contribute as active and informed citizens 
  • understand Australia’s political system and how it enables change 
  • investigate some of Australia’s First Nations Changemakers  
  • to discover the importance of Ceremonies in the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture that is still alive and thriving throughout Australia. 
  • examine the ways political parties, interest groups, media and individuals influence government and decision-making processes 
  • develop a plan for action that considers some of the challenges, opportunities, risks, and strategies to respond to a local and global issue 

Assessment

Students complete a digital workbook on OneNote and a guided reflection task for each day.
