Year 6 Library

Library Year 6

Year Level Description

The program aims to assist students to become confident, independent library users. They are encouraged to access and locate information from a variety of sources within the library and the classroom using their iPads and the Information Literacy format. They are encouraged to locate additional information by utilising other areas in the wider community such as human resources, magazines, newspapers and other libraries. Students are assisted in identifying their information needs and how to focus their research. They are also assisted to use the internet for specific research and be aware of the need for authenticity and reliability when using the web.

Students read a wide range of novels and discuss the obvious literary elements. They are encouraged to independently select reading material suitable for their individual needs, and to try books of different genres. Book Chat encourages challenging reading and in-depth discussion of the literary elements of texts within groups.

Achievement Standard

By the end of the year students are expected to:

  • identify information requirements for tasks, locate information, and create a research plan;
  • assess the integrity of electronic information;
  • make connections between the ways authors may represent similar storylines, ideas, relationships and facts within genres;
  • understand, interpret and experiment with a range of devices and deliberate word play in poetry and other literary texts.
