Outdoor Education
Year Level Description
In Term 2, all Year 6 students participate in an Outdoor Education program based at Carey’s permanent Outdoor Education centre, Camp Toonallook. Toonallook is situated on the shores of the Gippsland Lakes, on the Banksia Peninsula and is approximately 300 kilometres from Melbourne. The program builds on students’ prior experiences and combines on-site learning at Toonallook with a two-night expedition to the Mitchell River National Park, camping at Echo Bend Caravan Park.
While on expedition, the students undertake short walks to culturally and ecologically significant environments. These experiences promote greater understanding of, and appreciation for the natural world and the effect that humans have on environmental systems. The expedition also has a strong Indigenous focus with students having the opportunity to visit a sacred cultural site and learn about First Nations history and culture.
At Toonallook the students have an opportunity to continue to deepen their connection to Place through structured free time as well as activities such as bike riding, kayaking, campfire jaffles and group games.
