Course Description
Business Studies is a contemporary unit and is subject to ongoing change. The areas of study may vary in light of emerging interests, current affairs and events that impact the business environment.
The key objective of this unit is to introduce students to a range of financial, legal and business skills which lay the foundation for their successful participation in society as young adults. It introduces aspects of accounting, legal studies, business management and economics and allows students to gain initial awareness of these subject areas.
The course integrates the use of computers in key areas of reporting, analysing and researching information. Students develop skills in the use of spreadsheets as a financial tool and make extensive use of the internet in researching information and implementing decisions.

Areas of Study
Innovation, Enterprise and Marketing
Students develop an awareness of the skills and initiative required for business success, areas covered include:
- Types of business and types of activities including the development of detailed Business and Marketing plans to establish a start-up business.
- Approaches to innovation in a start-up business.
- Entrepreneurial skill development in commercial and social business settings.
Economics
Students explore the impact of economic events on financial decisions, areas covered include:
- How resources are allocated in the global economy.
- Assessment of the impact of economic events on society.
The Law in Action
Students investigate the need for laws in society, the key features of criminal and civil law and the possible outcomes and impacts of crime, areas covered include:
- Investigating the need for laws.
- Examining the difference between criminal and civil law.
- Exploring the role of courts and punishment.
