Description
A number of common subjects are undertaken by all students in Year 10— English, Mathematics, Health and Physical Education and Science.
Students also continue to be involved in our co-curricular program. Choosing an English Course
Year 10 students study English or English as an Additional Language (EAL).
Depending on results of testing at the time of enrolment in Senior School, students studying English as an Additional Language are also enrolled in Bridging English as an Additional Language.
Year 10 students may also study one or both of the Electives— Literature and Production and/or Language and Power.
Learning Development may recommend that a student studies Learning Literacies in addition to English.

There are four Mathematics courses offered at Year 10.
10 Mathematical Methods and Analysis Advanced is an invite only course. Students can apply to be considered for this course before they enter Year 10.
10 Mathematical Methods and Analysis is a prerequisite for Year 11 IB Mathematics Analysis and Approaches or VCE Mathematical Methods Units 1 and 2. This course is for students who have achieved an average of C or above in Year 9 Mathematics. The course focusses on preparing students with the depth of Mathematical knowledge they will be required to understand for the Year 11 IB or VCE courses that have an emphasis on Functions, Geometry and Trigonometry and Calculus.
10 General Mathematics and Applications follows on from Mainstream Year 9 Mathematics. This course prepares students for Year 11 IB Mathematics Applications and Interpretations or VCE General Mathematics. Students who have achieved an average below C over the course of Year 9 Mainstream Mathematics or have studied Year 9 Foundation Mathematics are encouraged to select this course. The course focusses on preparing students with the breadth of knowledge they will be required to understand for the Year 11 IB or VCE courses that have an emphasis on Statistics, Probability and Functions. Students use calculators (and/or other technology) for their assessments.
10 Foundation Mathematics follows on from the Year 9 Foundation course and is invite only. Students who study this course will not be able to study the IB Diploma Program in Year 11 and 12. The course focusses on preparing students with the breadth of knowledge they will be required to understand to study Two units of VCE Foundation Mathematics The course assessments relate to practical applications in mathematics for everyday life at home, in the community, at work and in study. Students use calculators (and/or other technology) for their assessments.
Students should carefully select the level of Mathematics to study in Year 10 to ensure their pathways remain open.
Mathematics Analysis and Approaches SL (MAA SL) or VCE Mathematical Methods Units are prerequisites for a number of University courses such as Commerce and Science. However, prerequisites for the same course do vary between institutions so please consult the VTAC resources outlined below or contact your Careers Adviser for further information. You can access the VTAC Prerequisite planner (available here). You can also use the Prerequisites 2027 document as a guide.
The guide is published two years in advance. Please note that the 2030 guide (which will have the actual prerequisites for students commencing study in 2030) will be released mid 2027 when students are in Year 10.
Students intending to study Chemistry or Physics in Year 11 are advised that Mathematics Analysis and Approaches SL (MAA SL), Mathematics Analysis and Approaches HL (MAA HL) or VCE Mathematical Methods are strongly recommended.

In Year 10 the Health and Physical Education course reflects the underlying goals of life-long health and fitness. It aims to promote ways and means to help students live healthier, happier and more productive lives
The study of Health provides a forum in which the reality of a teenager's life and the issues that are important to them can be highlighted and given value in their own right. Students are encouraged to take responsibility for their own actions and to understand the effect their actions have on themselves and those around them.
Health Education offers experiential learning, providing opportunities for students to think critically and reflect upon a variety of personal and community health issues. It recognises that health is multi-dimensional and is influenced by both individual and group actions.
In Physical Education students are acquainted with a range of diverse activities to establish and foster an increase in skill level, confidence and motivation to promote participation in various forms of physical activity in post school years. Students explore movement concepts and strategies to evaluate and refine their own and others’ movement performances. The curriculum also provides opportunities for students to refine and consolidate personal and social skills in demonstrating leadership, teamwork and collaboration in a range of physical activities. The year-long program builds on the Middle School curriculum through greater depth, rigour and independence.
It prepares students for VCE or the International Baccalaureate by developing the knowledge, skills and study routines required for senior Science. Students complete practical investigations, data analysis, extended responses, examination-style tasks and formal examinations, alongside an independent investigation informed by their interests and the Zero extended expedition.
