VCE Acceleration Units 3-4 at Year 11
Acceleration
Year 11 VCE students may have the opportunity to include the study of one subject at Year 12 level. Some VCE Unit 3-4 studies do not have Unit 1-2 pre-requisites.
There are benefits to be gained from study of VCE units at a higher level. Study of a Unit 3 and 4 sequence enables students to:
- study a sixth subject, which may be of advantage for tertiary entrance purposes.
- qualify to study a University Extension study in Year 12.
Students wishing to apply to study a Unit 3 and 4 in Year 11 must meet the following criteria:
- Demonstrate they are academically suited with results of an 'A' standard in all Semester 1 subjects.
- Be well organisation and motivated to succeed.
- Demonstrated strength in the subject area of the proposed Unit 3 and 4 subject.
The following Unit 3-4 studies are available to study as accelerated subjects in Year 11 as they do not have Units 1-2 prerequisites:
- Applied Computing: Data Analytics
- Applied Computing: Software Development
- Biology
- Business Management
- Geography
- Human Health and Development
- History - Australian
- Legal Studies
- Mathematics - General
- Politics
- Physical Education
- Psychology
- Religion and Society
Year 10 students wishing to be considered to study a VCE Unit 3-4 subject in Year 11 should complete the following application form: Application to Accelerate VCE Units 3-4 (in 2025)
The deadline for submission of the acceleration form is Thursday 1 August 2024.
Notes:
- Some Unit 3-4 Studies, including Mathematical Methods, all English subjects, Languages, Physics and Chemistry, have pre-requisites of the relevant Unit 1-2 Study.
- It would be challenging to study an Art and Design Unit 3-4 subject without having completed Units 1-2.
- Year 11 students new to Carey who wish to undertake these Unit 3-4 Studies must have evidence of successful completion of their Unit 1-2 sequence and may be asked to sit a placement assessment to be considered for acceleration.
- Accelerating Year 10 students are expected to maintain a high level of success and positive learning behaviours in their Unit 1-2 Studies, to continue with the relevant Unit 3-4 Studies in Year 11.
