Year 11 and VCE

Description

Year 11 students generally study:

  • Units 1 and 2 of English or English as an Additional Language, English Language or Literature;
  • ten other units (which might include a VET sequence), these units are usually at the Unit 1 and 2 level but it is possible to study Units 3 and 4 provided the appropriate selection criteria are met.

It is not in the student’s best interest to study an advanced level subject unless they are able to perform to a high standard in that and all their other subjects. As a guide, students need to achieve results which place them in the top 20% of students in each measure. Decisions are based on whether the student has performed at a consistently high level, relative to other students, in all subjects. NAPLAN and other available testing is used as a measure of performance.

There are benefits to be gained from study of VCE units at a higher level. Study of a Unit 3 and 4 sequence enables students to:

  • study a sixth subject, which may be of advantage for tertiary entrance purposes;
  • qualify to study a University Extension study in Year 12.

Year 11 students may study a VCE subject at a higher level if they are well organised, academically suited, and it is felt that the study will not adversely affect overall performance. Students who complete a Unit 3 and 4 in Year 11 are expected to study five Unit 3 and 4 subjects in Year 12.

Students wishing to apply to study a Unit 3 and 4 in Year 11 are required to submit an application that shows they meet the following criteria:

  • Results of an 'A' standard in all Semester 1 subjects.
  • Demonstrated good organisation and motivation to succeed.
  • Demonstrated strength in the subject area of the proposed Unit 3 and 4 subject.

To apply for permission to study VCE Units 3 and 4 and for further information, please refer to the Application to Accelerate a VCE 3-4 Subject Form

Applications must be submitted by 8.30am on Monday 29 July 2024.

Please Note:

  • If a student undertakes study at the Unit 3 and 4 level and performs poorly and repeats the units, a penalty may be applied by some institutions when determining tertiary offers.

At the end of Semester 1 students may wish to review their Unit 2 choices for Semester 2; limited places may be available for students to make changes.
