Advanced Mathematics
Prerequisites
Entry to the advanced course is determined through an assessment. Students wishing to enter the Advanced Mathematics Course must sit an entry assessment in Term 4. Students will be assessed to determine that they are capable of engaging in mathematical concepts 12 months ahead in the curriculum.
Students are also assessed with standardised testing to ensure they can meet the standards of the Advanced cohort. Students within this course are achieving in the top 5% of the mathematical cohort.
Students who wish to be tested for Advanced Mathematics in Year 7 should select Core Enrichment in their Web preferences.
Unit Description
Students in the Advanced Maths class for Year 7 are identified as having a high capacity for numerical reasoning and enjoy challenging non-routine mathematical investigations which may also involve basic computer programming. Students engage in challenging problem-solving activities and participate in mathematics competitions such as the Australian Problem Solving Mathematics Olympiad and the Australian Mathematics Competition, among others.
The advanced course engages in the Year 8 Victorian Curriculum and beyond to challenge student learning. The course compacts the curriculum to provide time for more in-depth study of non-routine challenging applied questions. This program is aimed at preparing the most talented mathematicians for the most challenging Senior School Mathematics courses: IB Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches, HL and VCE Specialist Mathematics. Students who are successful to continue with Advanced Mathematics in Year 7, 8 and 9 will be able to apply to accelerate VCE mathematics in Year 10.
All mathematical classes use a variety of practical and concrete experiences, students continue to develop their mathematical knowledge and skills throughout the sequences of the Victorian Curriculum. Students participate in regular problem-solving activities to allow them to connect ideas in mathematics, investigate problems collaboratively and master key problem-solving strategies.
