Chinese Advanced

Languages Unit

Prerequisite

Students must have Chinese extensive prior language learning. (Bilingual schools, in country study or EAL students)

Please note:

  • Placement in the Year 7 Chinese Advanced class does not require students to meet the VCAA criteria for Second Language Advanced study. (All students who select Chinese Advanced will be asked to sit a written and spoken proficiency placement test). Subject to student numbers, Year 7 Chinese Advanced students and Year 7 Chinese students may be placed in a combined class. Students will continue to have differentiated and supported pathways.

All students who have developed oral proficiency through extensive prior language learning i.e., bilingual schools, in country study or students not eligible for Chinese SL are able to apply for Chinese Advanced. In Senior School they can continue their study of Chinese (First, Second Language Advanced or Second Language level, depending on the student’s language and educational background, and if continuing into VCE, VCAA criteria). It is important that background information regarding students’ experience and proficiency in Chinese is provided during the subject selection process.

Unit Description

Chinese Advanced is offered at Year 7 to students who have developed oral proficiency due to having Chinese as a home language, so they can advance their vocabulary, writing skills and gain confidence using the Language in a variety of contexts.

 

The course offers further development in the Chinese language and aspects of Chinese culture relevant to a range of topics covered.

In this unit students:

  • deepen their understanding of cultural elements;
  • deepen their understanding of Chinese characters and learn to read and write Chinese passages;
  • prepare oral presentations and discussions;
  • speak and write about their personal world;
  • develop skills through a wide range of activities including language games, discussions, presentations, videos, writing tasks and computer-assisted tasks.
