Design
Common Unit
Unit Description
In Year 7 Design and Technologies, students are introduced to the exciting world of design thinking, innovation, and creative problem-solving. Through hands-on, project-based learning, they explore how people design products, systems and environments to meet real-world needs and challenges.
Students learn to think like ethical designers—considering the impact of their decisions on people, communities, and the environment. They explore how design can be used to solve problems that matter, such as sustainability, accessibility, and wellbeing. By applying critical and systems thinking, they develop responsible and thoughtful solutions that have a positive impact.
Throughout the course, students plan and manage their own design projects, working both independently and collaboratively. They learn to investigate, prototype, evaluate, and iterate their ideas, while developing skills in working with a range of materials, tools and techniques.
This subject empowers students to become creative and ethical problem-solvers—gaining confidence, pride and satisfaction as they design innovative solutions for a better world.
