Subject Description
Year 7 students begin their study of Humanities with the ‘Geography Toolkit’ Unit. This enables them to develop an understanding of key geographical concepts like space, place and change. Students learn mapping skills such as grid referencing and topography, and analyse geographical images. This ‘toolkit’ gives students a foundation for future study of the planet and our place within it.
The second area of study is ‘Place and Liveability’. Students investigate the factors that determine population distribution and factors influencing why people decide to live where they do. They assess the liveability of Melbourne before completing fieldwork which evaluates that of their own area.
The ‘Water in the World’ unit has students examine the vital role played by water on Earth both societally and culturally. Topics include: water as an essential renewable resource; the management of water resources both in Australia and abroad; and what the future may hold for our water resources.
In Semester 2, students begin their study of history. Students gain an understanding of history not just as the story of dates, people and civilisations, but rather, as an active argument with the past. They understand the role of a historian not as a narrator but as a detective, and are equipped with skills to interrogate the past. They begin to acquire the critical skills of a historian, including an ability to interpret evidence through identifying and utilising a range of sources. Students will evaluate those sources, understanding perspectives which influence its content and purpose, and they will explore reasons for change and continuity.
The course begins with students learning about the historical significance of the Ancient past and the histories of Ancient First Nations Peoples of Australia. They sequence and identify the significant periods, events and societies. This is followed by an investigation of the key beliefs, values, places and practices of Ancient Rome. Topics such as everyday life, mythology and religion, social and political structure, and the role of women are explored. The unit concludes with a focus on the role and achievements of Julius Caesar.
