Science
Common Unit
Unit Description
Semester 1 in Year 7 Science is an introduction to the nature of science and scientific research leading into an investigation of the properties of matter and mixtures, and the principles that guide the separation of substances in nature and industry. Forces and machines are also investigated during this semester. In Semester 2, an investigation of the diversity of life on Earth and the relationships between living things and their environment is linked to the Year 7 Environment Camp in Term 3. In Term 4 students apply their knowledge gained throughout the year in a practical STEM based project where they work collaboratively to investigate the concepts of sustainable buildings and design and conduct experiments to support the rationale for including certain aspects in their sustainable building. Scientific literacy and the essential skills of scientific research including experimental design, the collection and analysis of data, and science communication are emphasised throughout. Collaborative and independent inquiry-based learning foster curiosity, critical and creative thinking and the capacity to work effectively as part of a team.
