Elective Unit

Unit Description

This Computing elective explores the technologies behind artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, software development and data science. Students investigate how data is represented, transmitted and secured, how computer networks communicate across the internet, and how algorithms are designed and compared for efficiency. They also explore machine learning and artificial intelligence, learning how AI systems can recognise patterns, make predictions and improve their performance through training and experience.

 

Students develop strong programming skills in Python through differentiated foundation and extension pathways, progressing to object-oriented programming and graphical user interface (GUI) development. They then apply data science techniques to analyse, visualise and communicate insights from real-world datasets before completing a short independent project based on an area of personal interest.

Designed for students who enjoy logical thinking, creativity and solving challenging problems, this rigorous and engaging course develops technical knowledge and computational thinking skills that are valuable across a wide range of future study and careers.
