Ethics in Action

Elective Unit

Subject Description

This CARE elective subject challenges students to explore the foundations of ethical thinking and what shapes our sense of right and wrong in today’s complex world. Through a blend of personal reflection, philosophical inquiry, religious perspectives, and global case studies, students will engage with pressing ethical questions and dilemmas that impact individuals and communities alike.

Students will examine how beliefs, values, and worldviews influence moral choices, and learn to apply a range of ethical frameworks—including Christian, utilitarian, Kantian, situation, and virtue ethics—to real-world scenarios. The course emphasizes respectful dialogue, reasoned argument, and open-minded inquiry as students navigate controversial issues such as human rights, climate justice, and new technologies.

By participating in thoughtful debates, structured investigations, and collaborative campaigns, students will develop their ability to think critically, communicate persuasively, and reflect on their personal and social responsibilities.

The unit culminates in a student-designed ethical campaign, where learners advocate for change on an issue of their choice, demonstrating their understanding of ethics in action.

Areas of Study

Foundations of Ethical Thinking
In this unit, students explore what shapes our beliefs and values, how they influence our choices, and what sets ethics apart from morals. By examining a range of ethical frameworks, students learn to approach complex decisions from multiple perspectives. These skills are put into practice through the “Through Whose Lens?” assessment, where students critically examine ethical issues using different frameworks, building their capacity for analysis and reasoned judgment.

Applying Ethics to the World
Building on their foundational understanding, students investigate global ethical challenges and apply ethical frameworks to real-world dilemmas. Through the Ethical Campaigns assessment, students design and advocate for change on an issue that matters to them, demonstrating their ability to think critically, communicate persuasively, and apply ethical reasoning to contemporary social concerns.
