Making the News

Elective Unit

Unit Description

The origins of the modern newspaper date back to ancient Rome, proving an innate desire within humanity to communicate and share news. This elective will involve students taking on the role of ‘journalist’ and producer as they create a project-based Carey news publication.

Students will learn skills in researching and producing news-based stories. They will learn the stylistic elements of writing different types of news stories, collecting and verifying information and editing for accuracy and conciseness. The publication will feature different mediums, allowing students to work to their strengths and try something new. This can include writing for print, reviewing, photography and using layout and design tools. Students will be writing pieces in the following forms – opinion, feature articles, reviews (music, theatre etc.), sports reports and more. So, put on your journalism hat and come and join us in ‘Making the News’.
