Unit Description
This subject is about stepping beyond simply playing music and beginning to shape it with intention. Students will explore what it really means to create and perform music in today’s world, to be in the ‘Creative Music Studio’ — experimenting with melody, harmony, rhythm, texture, form and how they interact with music technology as they develop their own musical voice. By analysing and reimagining existing works students will uncover how composers craft ideas, build tension, and communicate meaning, applying those insights to their own musical creations.
At the heart of the course is the connection between composition and performance. Students won’t just write music and leave it on the page — they’ll workshop it, rehearse it, perform it, and refine it, collaborating with each other along the way. Hearing their ideas played live (or through playback) becomes part of the creative process. Performance becomes a testing ground, helping students make decisions about structure, balance, texture, and expressive intent. They’ll learn to listen critically to their own work and strengthen it with purpose.
Music Technology plays an important role too. Using the Digital Audio Workstation (DAW) Soundtrap and music notation program MuseScore, students compose, arrange, edit, and refine their music, combining digital tools with their own instrumental or vocal skills. As both creator and performer, they’ll build the musical language and literacy needed to evaluate your choices, revise thoughtfully, and confidently explain their creative decisions.
Whether just beginning to find confidence or already feeling established as a musician, this course is designed to stretch students. It’s about independence, creative risk-taking, and developing artistic confidence — so that by the end of the year, the music performed and created doesn’t just work… it feels unmistakably theirs.
