Outdoor Education
Common Unit
Unit Description
Year 9 students participate in a variety of adventure activities whilst undertaking a seven-day expedition at the King River-Wabonga Plateau (Alpine National Park):
- Bushwalking and navigation
- Canoeing
- Mountain Bike Riding
- River crossings
- White water rafting/sledding
Students develop and utilise the necessary skills to successfully complete their journey. The responsibility for navigation, leadership and group management rests primarily with them. They live communally during the expedition, which encourages them to take a co-operative approach in their interaction with their peers and with the environment.
The Year 9 Outdoor Education program continues to build on the learning of previous years, encouraging students to develop and implement more ecologically sound living principles and supporting the development of key characteristics in line with Carey’s Positive Learner Attributes including:
- Self-esteem
- Resourcefulness
- Interdependence
- Independence
- Leadership
- Judgement
- Co-operation
- Tolerance
- Determination
- Resilience
Assessment
Students undertake a collaborative assessment with the Outdoor Education staff based on Carey’s nine positive learner attributes. This assessment process is consistent across all Middle School Outdoor Education programs.
