VET – Certificate III Sport and Recreation – Year 1

Year-Long Elective Unit

Prerequisites

There are no prerequisites for this unit. 

Students can enter this subject mid-year and receive VCE unit credit for their studies, however, may not receive the full tertiary qualification due to late enrolment. A statement of attainment will be issued with the competencies acquired. Students must complete both Year 1 and Year 2 of this study to receive the Certificate III qualification.

Course Description

Through the Certificate III in Sport and Recreation, students develop the practical skills and industry knowledge required to deliver sport and recreation services in a variety of settings. Students learn to work both independently and collaboratively while developing leadership, communication and organisational skills that are highly valued within the sport, fitness, aquatics and recreation industries.

The VCE/VET Sport and Recreation course (SIS30115) is drawn from a nationally recognised training package, providing students with qualifications that are recognised and transferable across Australia. The course combines classroom learning with practical application, allowing students to gain real-world experience in areas such as coaching, officiating, recreation activities, customer service, community sport and event delivery.

This course is well suited to students with an interest in sport, physical activity, health and recreation who enjoy applied, hands-on learning. It also provides valuable pathways into employment, apprenticeships, traineeships and further study within the sport, fitness, recreation and health sectors.

VCE/VET Sport and Recreation provides students with the opportunity to gain both a nationally recognised vocational qualification and a scored pathway (VCE study score) that supports future tertiary study options.

Course objectives

• Develop knowledge of the sport and recreation industry, including safety, communication, and operational procedures
• Gain practical skills in planning and delivering sport and recreation activities
• Learn how to work safely and effectively with diverse groups in a recreational environment
• Understand how to assist in organising sporting events and facility management
• Promote participation and engagement in sport and recreational activities
• Develop industry specific leadership, group management and organisational skills

Assessment

Assessment includes a combination of: 

• Competency-based assessments (practical tasks, projects, portfolios, oral tasks) 
• School-assessed coursework (SACs) 
• Mid-year and end of year Exam

Note: Year 2 of this program is a scored VCE study and includes a VCE VET examination as part of the Unit 3–4 sequence.

Students wishing to receive an ATAR contribution for VCE/VET Sport and Recreation must undertake scored assessment in the Unit 3-4 sequence. This study score can contribute directly to the ATAR, either as one of the student's best four studies (the primary four) or as a fifth or sixth study increment.
