Business Management: VCE Units 1 & 2
Elective Unit
Course Description
This accelerated subject enables Year 10 students to complete VCE Business Management Units 1 and 2.
In Unit 1, Planning a Business, students investigate how business ideas are created and developed. They explore entrepreneurship and examine how factors within the internal and external business environments—including economic, legal, technological, social and corporate responsibility considerations—can influence business planning.
In Unit 2, Establishing a Business, students examine the decisions involved in turning a business idea into an operating organisation. Areas of study include legal and financial requirements, establishing a customer base through effective marketing, and recruiting, selecting and supporting staff. Contemporary business case studies help students apply their knowledge to realistic situations.
The subject develops business knowledge alongside analytical writing, case-study analysis, decision-making and the application of theory to contemporary organisations. It is suited to students with a strong interest in business and enterprise who are ready for the pace and expectations of a VCE subject.

Year 11 Pathways
This accelerated option can benefit students considering either senior pathway:
- VCE: Students may be well placed to undertake Business Management Units 3 and 4 in Year 11, subject to Carey’s progression and subject-selection requirements.
- IB: Students entering the IB Diploma gain useful prior knowledge of entrepreneurship, business environments, finance, marketing, staffing and case-study analysis. This provides a strong foundation for IB Business Management at Standard or Higher Level.
Completing VCE Units 1 and 2 in Year 10 does not commit a student to choosing VCE in Year 11.
