Course Description
This course stems from the Australian Curriculum, providing students with a robust understanding of the conflicts and movements which shaped the 20th Century. Students will explore the context of the Paris Peace Conference which brought an official end to the First World War, and implications of the Treaty of Versailles for Germany. They will then investigate the causes of the Second World War and conduct a deep examination into the nature of Hitler's Germany and the ensuing Holocaust. They will delve into both the European and Asian theatres of war, conduct an independent inquiry and reflect on how this conflict shaped the world today. The focus then shifts to postwar social movements, with students investigating the US Civil Rights Movement, the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Rights movement, and South African Apartheid as key case studies. This unit will provide students with contextual understanding of both global history and Australia’s place within it. This subject is recommended for students considering IB or VCE History.
