Students will step into the rich history of music and discover how composers across the centuries have shaped the sounds we hear today. Through performing, listening, and composing, they will trace the evolution of musical language, structure, and expression — from the intricate lines of Medieval chant to the brilliance of the Baroque, the balance of the Classical era, the drama of the Romantic period, and the bold experimentation of the 20th century and beyond.
Students will explore how musical traditions have been established, challenged, and reimagined within contemporary contexts. This course is not about memorising dates; it is about bringing your own musical experience into the room and engaging with works through their historical, cultural, and artistic significance. Through innovative and creative approaches to the study of music, students will develop a deeper understanding of how music reflects and shapes the world around us.
Student will strengthen their aural perception, deepen their theoretical understanding, and refine their practical skills by testing ideas through historically informed performance and creative composition. Rather than simply studying music of the past and present, they will engage with it, reinterpret it, and make it their own.
By connecting analysis, creation, and performance, students will sharpen their musicianship and build the independence required for senior study. Whether considering VCE or IB Music, or simply wishing to become a more thoughtful, informed, and skilled musician, this course will prepare students for the next step — while reminding them that music is never frozen in history. It is alive, evolving, and waiting for you to add your voice to it.
