Design Technologies: Digital Fabrication

Unit Description

Year 9 Design Technologies – Design Fabrication introduces students to the exciting intersection of digital design, emerging technologies, engineering thinking and fabrication processes, including CAD modelling, Laser technology and 3D printing . Aligned with the Victorian Curriculum: Design and Technologies, the subject challenges students to investigate, design and create innovative solutions to real-world problems through the application of contemporary design practices and technological systems.

Students engage in the complete design process, developing skills in research, ideation, prototyping, testing and evaluation while exploring how digital technologies are transforming the way products are designed and manufactured. Through project-based learning, students learn to apply design thinking and engineering design methodologies to create products that respond to user needs, functional requirements and sustainable design principles.

A key focus of the course is the use of computer-aided design (CAD) and digital modelling technologies. Students develop proficiency in industry-relevant software and digital workflows, using these tools to communicate ideas, refine concepts and prepare designs for production. They explore how designers, engineers and manufacturers use digital technologies to innovate and solve complex challenges across a range of industries.

Students gain hands-on experience with contemporary fabrication technologies, which may include 3D printing, laser cutting, CNC manufacturing, electronics and rapid prototyping tools. Through these experiences, they develop an understanding of material properties, manufacturing systems and production processes while building confidence in applying technical knowledge to practical outcomes.

Design portfolios document the development of ideas, research findings, technical drawings, digital models, prototype testing and reflective evaluation. This process promotes creativity, resilience and problem-solving while reinforcing the importance of iterative design and continuous improvement.

Through designing, making and innovating with contemporary technologies, students develop the technical expertise, creative confidence and systems thinking required to thrive in an increasingly digital, technological and design-driven world.
