Elective Unit
Unit Description
Year 9 Textiles provides an opportunity to explore the creative and conceptual side of fashion design. From the beginning of the year, students will be engaged in activities to build their design skills and mastery of the machinery used in the Textiles studio. Sustainability issues that exist within the fashion industry will form the basis of the student’s conceptual investigations. Students will experiment with a variety of materials and emerging technologies, develop thematic concepts and document their design process in a folio.
Across the year, students will be working towards developing a collection of garments through liaising with an appropriate end-user. Their fashion pieces will be displayed in a celebration of learning in the Term 4 Fashion Showcase. This event will enable students to develop their technical skills and knowledge as well as expose them to relevant work-related skills such as collaboration, communication, organisation and evaluation.

Areas of Study
Design Production
- Students learn to investigate, experiment, design/ideate, produce and evaluate to achieve a final outcome. They develop effective decision-making and problem-solving skills, project management and team collaboration.
- Students research sustainable fashion and relevant end-user need, they establish a design brief (statement of intent), research support material, design a range of options for consideration, evaluate possible designs, develop a production plan, consider safety issues and establish constraints. Finally, they make the negotiated product/s.
Design Folio
- A Design Folio operates in conjunction with the production work. It records and showcases the student's ability to communicate visually through research and development, trials and testing of materials, tools and equipment and present clear evaluations of the design thinking journey.
