Product Design and Technology: Wood

Elective Unit

Unit Description

In this unit, an introductory project in wood allows students to become familiar with correct and safe workshop practice. Once accustomed to workshop methodology, students follow a design process where a design brief challenges them to design and plan a product for manufacture.

  • What is the role of the design process?
  • How do characteristics and properties of various woods influence my design?
  • How do I communicate my ideas in Product Design and Technology?
  • Why do we evaluate our production work on completion?


  • Investigating and Designing: Understanding hand tools, a design brief, the communication of ideas and production planning.
  • Production: The completion of one product based on the requirements outlined in a design brief.
  • Analysing and Evaluating: A presentation of outcomes.
