Common Unit

Prerequisite

Year 7 Chinese or equivalent.

Students continue their Chinese SL pathways.  In Senior School they can pursue the study of Chinese (Second Language or Second Language Advanced classes, depending on the student’s background and VCE VCAA criteria). It is important that background information regarding students’ experience and proficiency in Chinese is provided during the subject selection process.

Unit Description

Students study aspects of Chinese language and culture relevant to a range of topics. Students:

• expand their reading and writing of Chinese characters so that they are able to communicate in written Chinese
• use spoken Chinese in a variety of situations to discuss where people live and how they get to work, to talk about jobs, school uniform and daily routine
• develop skills through a wide range of activities including role play, games, videos, writing and reading tasks
• complete a variety of tasks including using Chinese word processing software to write in Chinese characters

Assessment

• Formative vocabulary and grammar tasks.
• Aural and reading comprehension tasks.
• Oral tasks.
• Writing tasks.
• Cultural projects.
