Year 8 Art, Design and Technologies

Design Technologies: Wood

Elective Unit

Unit Description

In Year 8 Design Technologies: Wood, students develop their knowledge and skills in safe workshop practices while learning a range of woodworking techniques. They explore various methods of shaping, joining and finishing timber using both hand tools and machinery, with a strong emphasis on safe and correct operation. Students are also introduced to freehand drawing and CAD (Computer-Aided Design) software to communicate and refine their design ideas. Building on these foundational skills, students respond to a design brief by researching, designing and planning a product for manufacture. They independently manage the construction process, applying appropriate techniques and problem-solving skills throughout. Upon completion, students test and evaluate their finished product against the design brief, reflecting on the effectiveness of their design decisions, manufacturing processes and final outcome.

Essential Questions

  • What is the role of the design process?
  • How do characteristics and properties of various woods influence my design?
  • How can I work safely and independently in the workshops?
  • How do I communicate my ideas in Design and Technologies?
  • Why do we evaluate our production work on completion?
