Learning Areas > Faith and Ethics

Faith and Ethics (formerly Community and Religious Education) holds a valued place at Carey, a school established under the auspices of the Baptist Union of Victoria. The learning area gives students meaningful opportunities to explore the role of faith in school and community life, equipping them with the concepts, language, and critical thinking skills to thoughtfully engage with matters of faith and belief — while maintaining a respectful, open-minded approach that doesn't promote any particular perspective. 

Students experience Faith and Ethics through regular Community Time, alongside a diverse elective program exploring life's big questions. Curious about meaning, belief, identity, ethics, or community? Consider the Year 8 Elective: Quest: Stories That Shape Us, or in Year 9, Ethics in Action. 

In Middle School, Faith and Ethics explores the beliefs, values, and worldviews that shape individuals and societies. Through discussion, inquiry, and reflection in Community Time, students consider questions of identity, meaning, and ethical responsibility — building critical thinking, respectful dialogue, and an understanding of how religious, philosophical, and cultural perspectives shape the way people live today. 

Service is a key part of the Middle School experience. Immersive, real-world learning opportunities help students build empathy, responsibility, and practical skills for contributing positively to their communities. 

Faith and Ethics is further enriched by school-wide events, including Chapel services and guest speakers, offering further opportunities for shared reflection within Community Time. Throughout Middle School, students are encouraged to explore, question, and grow — becoming thoughtful, responsible, and compassionate members of society.
