About the Learning Area
At Carey Donvale, we follow the Victorian Curriculum; an amalgamation of the Australian Curriculum and the Victorian priorities and standards. This curriculum document carries the prescribed content and achievement standards that form the foundation of teaching and learning in English. It presents the curriculum as a continuum of learning. Students work at varying levels of achievement across the curriculum, therefore, classroom teachers differentiate lessons accordingly. This ensures that the learning needs of all students are met.
The English curriculum is built around the three interrelated strands of language, literature and literacy. These three strands focus on developing the student’s knowledge, understanding and skills in listening, reading, viewing, speaking, writing and creating. When teaching English, we are required to continually build on the concepts, skills and processes developed in earlier levels and revisit, strengthen and develop these as needed.
